Kumarakom is a paradise for the birdwatchers of the world. One who loves the world of birds can’t hold back themselves from visiting the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary!
The Bird Sanctuary in Kumarakom showcases the true habitats of the birds of Kerala.
The Bird Sanctuary is located along the banks of the picturesque Vembanadu Lake – and is often also known as the Vembanadu Bird Sanctuary. It is one of the major bird sanctuaries in the country.
It was during the colonial period that a once rubber plantation was turned into the present day 14-acres bird sanctuary! It is now an ornithologist's paradise because it is home for a wide variety of migratory birds like the Darter, Egret, Teal, Heron and the Siberian Stork.
On a visit to the sanctuary, tourists and birdwatchers can find themselves inside the lush greenery of woods which attracts the variety of migratory birds come in a flock of thousands.Ornithologists have found out that some of the birds migrate from the Himalayas and others from places as far as the Siberia.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary has the localbird attractions like the Cuckoo, different varieties of Owls, Water Ducks and Waterfowls, Egrets and Herons and many types of Cranes. Many migratory birds arrive here as the visitors of certain seasons as well.
Tourists and birdwatchers tend to visit the place in the June to August period asthis is the time that the bird sanctuary gets filled with lots of rare sights. It the breeding season for the resident wetland birds like the Indian Darter, Little Cormorant and also for other species like the egrets and herons etc.
It is worthwhile to spend a day or two in the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, watching the movements and behaviour of the migratory birds that have visited more places than some of us have ever!
The sanctuary, as mentioned earlier, produces some of the best sights in the June to August period. But if you are looking for the sight of migratory birds, then November to Late February is the best season to visit the Bird Sanctuary!
In addition to birdwatching and walking through the lap of Mother Nature, one can also manage to have a rejuvenating boat trip along the beautiful waters of Vembanadu Lake at the Sanctuary. The trips along the pristine waters of the Sanctuary isthe perfect relaxation one could ask for. The Bird Sanctuary offers boat trips on well-maintained Houseboats as well as motorboats for hired cruise.
The Bird Sanctuary is open from morning 6:00 a.m. till evening 6:00 p.m. everyday. It is about 95 k.m. drive from the Cochin International Airport.
